Lasithi is the easternmost region of Crete, famous for its windswept Lasithi Plateau dotted with traditional white windmills and the palm-lined beach of Vai. The climate is Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers perfect for swimming and windsurfing in the Libyan Sea, and mild, rainy winters ideal for hiking through the plateau's olive groves and exploring the 16th-century Venetian fortress on Spinalonga island. You can visit the plateau's cave of Diktaion Andron, where Zeus was supposedly born, or take a boat to the island of Chrisi for its turquoise waters and golden sand.
